Frequently Asked Questions
What is a board foot?
One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of lumber (1″ x 12″ x 12″). It’s the standard unit for measuring lumber volume.
Why use board feet instead of linear feet?
Board feet accounts for all three dimensions (length, width, thickness), making it more accurate for pricing and material estimation.
How do I calculate board feet?
Board Feet = (Length × Width × Thickness) ÷ 144. Multiply by quantity for total volume.
What about waste allowance?
Always add 10-15% extra for cutting waste, especially for complex projects or exotic woods.
How does thickness affect pricing?
Lumber thickness is measured in quarters of an inch (4/4 = 1″, 5/4 = 1.25″, etc.). Thicker boards cost more per board foot.
